Welcome to the honors Institute

Dear Prospective Student -

I am pleased that you are in the course of learning more about the Honors Institute of Belmont Abbey College. If you are the kind of student who believes that great books, excellent teaching, diligent studying, ever more thoughtful writing, substantive friendships are the best ways to progress towards a deeper understanding of all that is important in life,  you have happened onto an educational program which very much responds to what you are looking for. If you seek to expand and refine your understanding of faith as well as come to a fuller sense of what Pope Benedict XVI calls “the grandeur of reason,” there is much in the Honors Institute that can be of help to you. Indeed, these are precisely the  values and aspirations that characterize our students and this remarkable educational opportunity.

If you also have an interest in new or continuing exposure to the arts, there are several occasions during the course of an academic year that provide this kind of experience. To list only a few typical instances, Honors Institute students attend performances by the Charlotte Symphony, Opera Carolina, and the North Carolina Dance Theatre, as well as those of musicians and dancers of national and international repute.  Throughout their time in the Honors Institute, students also enjoy dinners with faculty or administrators, lectures by well-known scholars, a beach retreat in May, and a month’s summer study abroad program.

Since the Honors Institute is for highly motivated students of excellent character, admission to the program is based upon a competitive selection process. Please note, too, that students admitted into the Honors Institute are generally awarded an Honors Fellowship. You can find information pertaining to admissions/scholarship criteria in the “Scholarship and  Special Opportunities” link.

If you have specific questions about the Honors Institute, please do not hesitate to contact me (please see my email address and telephone number below).  If you would like to speak or write to one of our current Honors Institute students, I would be glad to make arrangements for you to do so. Finally, students interested in the Honors Institute are invited to visit the campus of Belmont Abbey College and to take part in a scholarship interview with me during one of our Scholarship Weekends or on other occasions.

Sincerely,

Eugene F. Thuot
